July 25 to July 30, 2009

Each year The Men’s Resource Center sponsors trips into the Wilderness. In the past we have traveled to Alaska, Peru, and Wyoming.

This summer we will be taking a wilderness trip where it is probably safe to say many of you have never been. It is in a mountain range called the Absarokas. If you look on a map, you will find it in northwestern Wyoming, due north of Dubois.

I’ve been there numerous times. It is probably the biggest wilderness area in the lower 48. I have seldom seen other people when deep within the wilderness. It is in the midst of grizzly bear country and on occasion we have been privileged to spot a bear from a distance. It is an area where wolves run free, where elk hang out high in the mountain meadows and moose wander in and out of the willows close to mountain streams. It is a space where eagles can be seen flying high overhead. This is the land where surprises are many and participants marvel at the beauty and the wildness of the terrain.

The journey in and out is atop a horse. We will be crossing rugged ground and you will have lots of feelings when traversing up and down the side of a mountain and looking over the side at a deep canyon or a rocky slope. By now you are probably realizing this trip is not for the faint of heart.

I want to challenge you to take the trip with me. As you read this, you may see the trip as too scary to do. Or you may see this trip as the most exciting adventure you’ve ever thought about doing. If you see this trip as that, sign up at once. Don’t wait. If you see this as too scary, let me ask you this question. Is it possible if you are not excited about this trip, that you are not scaring yourself enough these days or taking the necessary risks to create aliveness?

Personal growth is based on a willingness to take risks. We get scared when taking risks but without feeling scared there is no excitement. This trip is a metaphor for the journey we take through life. Might it be that in your day-to-day existence, you want to take increased risks, feel more connected to self and others and experience more vitality?

This journey is about living life as fully as possible complete with all the thrills you can handle. The week will provide an opportunity to get away, reside in a foreign yet safe environment, where you can evaluate and appraise your life. This journey will be an experience that you will never forget. It will impact your desire to create within your life greater connection with self and others, increased pleasure and freedom from depression.

The wilderness trip will begin and end in Dubois, Wyoming. Flights in and out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
